PVC Patches

Fire crews and launch squadrons work through bad weather, and a quiet night often goes unnoticed. Custom PVC patches put a mark on the gear that rode through the shift with them. Crews posted miles apart can wear the same design on their own kit. When a vest retires, its patch moves to the replacement.

Worn where the work is

People who wear a PVC patch work where weather reaches their equipment before the day is done. Fire departments, sheriff’s offices, flight squadrons, and launch teams order one shared design so the group still reads as the same crew when members rotate. The unit’s emblem, and often a mission name, tells a stranger which crew did the work. Color and border hold, so the mark looks unchanged from the first day out to late in the year. After that first order, the artwork remains on file, and the next class or the next launch can match the last run.

Vests and bags take this patch well, since both go outside and get handled every day. Weatherproof and waterproof, the PVC holds through heat, moisture, movement, and hard use without fading or fraying. Sizes run from 2 inches to 4.5 inches. That span covers a chest piece and a cap piece. You can feel ridges on a raised face with your hand. The people who order them include space programs, companies, military units, fire and EMS departments, rescue teams, police departments, and clubs and churches.

How the mold sets color

Cutting a mold from the drawing starts the job. PVC, a soft plastic, flows into the mold and cures as one piece. Each color has its own level, so small type comes out clear while neighboring colors remain apart. Custom shapes and colors are available, and a 2D patch keeps its colors flat. Small words hold after the cure, even on a crest. 3D PVC patches raise some areas and recess others, so a badge or a set of wings has depth you can feel. Shapes can be round, square, rectangle, or cut to the outline of the design. Both the flat version and the raised version take the same backings.

Backings and edge options

PVC hook and loop patches are the backing most orders take. Sewing one half to the patch lets it move from a jacket to a bag. The full set of backings is hook and loop, iron-on, peel and stick, PVC backing, and no backing. Sewing on uses the molded sew channel, a groove around the border where the needle passes. Metallic finish gives the look of a real metal badge. Officers wear that finish on the job, and metallic PVC police patches cover that use. Glow-in-the-dark color is also available as one of the colors.

PVC or the stitched patch

Choose PVC when the piece will face weather and daily wear, and when crisp edges matter. Moisture and hard handling leave it intact, and the molded edge holds its line. Embroidery means thread stitched onto a fabric base, which suits a buyer who wants cloth and thread. Services almost always embroider the patch that goes on the uniform, and PVC sometimes goes on the military gear worn beside it. Backpacks and duty wear are common places for PVC meant to outlast heavy use. Printed photos and gradients call for heat transfer patches, and woven patches take fine detail that thread can carry.

Outside
in weather

Jackets and packs that live outdoors carry the design through rain and hot days. The border and lettering hold clean, so the crew looks alike at season’s end. The patch keeps its shape even when the jacket stays damp.

Handled
and dragged

Crews drag bags and cases from the truck into a station all week. PVC on that gear keeps the name readable after months of scuffs and wet handles. People drop the case after a call and find the mark clear when they reach the next stop.

From gear
to gear

Hook and loop backing lets one patch travel from a vest to a cap when the assignment changes. The wearer pulls it off between jobs and sets it on the next item. The group remains easy to spot when members trade gear, since each person keeps wearing that patch.

Units ask a few practical questions every time they order this patch.

A mold shapes polyvinyl chloride into these patches for gear that sees open air. A 2D face stays level, and a 3D face carries raised and recessed detail under a fingertip. They hold detailed designs and fine lettering well across the face.

Forming the plastic lets PVC stay whole as the gear moves. An embroidered patch is the classic stitched patch, and it remains the usual choice for a military uniform patch. 100% embroidered covers the whole face in thread, and 75% embroidered lets some of the fabric background show. Field gear sometimes carries PVC, and the uniform itself almost always takes the stitched version.

Yes. Rain on a jacket and water in a soaked pack leave every color bright and unchanged. Heat and movement leave it ready for the next morning’s shift.

Choose the backing by how the person carries the patch, on shifting gear or on a fixed garment. Hook and loop fits when it moves between garments through the week. You sew a patch that belongs on one garment through the sew channel, or you pick a backing that bonds to the cloth.

The minimum order is 100 patches per design. Each extra design starts its own count at that same minimum. Departments and training courses use larger runs when more people need the same mark.

Production takes 3-4 weeks after the proof is approved, plus about 2 business days in transit. Anyone with an event date should tell their rep that date up front. There is no rush service.
