When it comes to designing custom Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) patches, color choice is critical. All branches of military service have strict uniform regulations, so, whether you’re a service member, a unit leader, or a military supplier, understanding the nuances of OCP patch colors is essential for creating compliant and visually appealing patch designs.

It’s also important to keep in mind that OCP patches are strictly regulated, just as any other piece of a military uniform, since they identify units, rank, and/or specialty. However, non-unit organized entities can design and create their own patches as long as they use the correct colors.

With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about picking colors and designing OCP patches for your team!

Your Guide To Custom OCP Military Patches

Know the approved color palette

OCP patches are subdued in color to maintain operational security. The approved colors are Spice Brown (67196), Bagby Green (67204), Olive Drab (67133), and Black (67138).

Black is generally used for outlines and for text in the patch design. Bagby Green is a muted olive green color that compliments the OCP uniform. Spice brown is a reddish-brown color often used for emblems and sometimes used for text. Adhering to these colors ensures every OCP patch blends in with the OCP uniform without compromising camouflage.

Thread and attachment options

In general, stick to embroidered patches. PVC patches and woven patches are sometimes used in different branches of the military, but uniform patches are almost always embroidered. Also, when it comes to an attachment option, requirements change depending on your branch of service. The Air Force allows for hook and loop attachments, while other branches require patches to be sewn into place. Heat transfer is not a viable option for uniform patches in the military.

Follow Regulations

Always be sure to check branch-specific regulations for patches. Your branch of service should have all the information you need in regard to size, shape, colors, and other aspects of patch design. Also, if you have questions about when and where you can wear custom patches, your branch of service will be able to provide all the necessary information.
